Why are they called "Coasters"?

Silver wine coasters have graced our dinner tables for hundreds of years. Ever since the Georgians discovered that irresistible combination of crisp linen, sparkling crystal and polished silver, no elegant table was complete without a pair of coasters.

The name “coaster” has a rather peculiar derivation. Originally it was just a simple tray that carried a decanter or bottle. It became customary to push the tray around the table from guest to guest. On a highly polished table and with a felt base to the tray, this would glide easily across the surface. This action was likened to that of small ships and luggers that plied their trade from port to port along the coast. These boats were called “coasters” and gave their name to to the tray that went from guest to guest around the table.

Originally designed to collect drips from bottles and decanters and to protect the table surface, wine coasters and bottle coasters have now become an intrinsic part of the well dressed dinner table.
